How to set a grocery budget that actually holds
Published by Plenty
A grocery budget becomes useful when completed trips are recorded consistently instead of judged from memory.
Start from a real number
Do not guess, and do not pick an aspirational figure. Look at what the last few weeks actually cost and start there. A budget you blow every single week stops being information and becomes noise you learn to ignore.
Record the trip when it ends
Plenty does not estimate the basket while the list is being built. After a trip, type the amount into the completion card and save it, or use receipt scanning. The Budget tab uses saved visits to show what remains this month and spend by category (Shopping/Views/ShoppingListDetailView.swift; Shopping/Views/BudgetDashboardView.swift, shipped app).
Review the pattern, not the day
- Look at a few weeks together. One expensive shop is usually a stocking-up shop, not overspending.
- Expect the swing to come from a handful of items rather than everything creeping.
- Adjust the budget toward reality rather than toward what you wish were true.
Frequently asked questions
Weekly or monthly budget?
Weekly matches how most people shop and gives you four chances a month to correct, instead of one.
Do I have to scan a receipt?
No. You can enter the completed-trip total by hand. Receipt scanning is the faster route.
