The pantry staples checklist, grouped by where you find them
Published by Plenty
A pantry staples checklist should cover shelf-stable ingredients that turn leftovers into meals, plus household items you would rather notice at home than at the shop. This version groups 46 items by aisle and is formatted to copy into a shopping list app. Plenty does not track cupboard inventory.
What counts as a pantry staple?
Treat an item as a staple when it stores safely, works across more than one meal and is something you routinely replace. USDA's shelf-stable storage chart lists dried pasta and rice at two years and low-acid canned vegetables at two to five years (https://www.fsis.usda.gov/food-safety/safe-food-handling-and-preparation/food-safety-basics/shelf-stable-food). Perishable produce can still be a household basic, but it is not a pantry item.

How do you get this list onto your phone without retyping it?
This checklist is designed to be copied into the app instead of printed and retyped.
- Select the checklist items above and copy them.
- Open a Plenty list and tap the add field.
- Paste one item per line. A line break, a comma, a semicolon, " and " and " & " all start a new item, so an entry like "salt and pepper" arrives as two (Shopping/Services/GroceryParsing.swift, shipped app).
- Leave the word "a" out of a pasted line. The parser reads it as the quantity one, not as a separator, so "a loaf" becomes 1 × loaf.
- Submit the field. Items are grouped by the app’s own categoriser, not by the headings on this page — tinned tomatoes and frozen berries land under Produce, and names it does not recognise land in Other, where you can change the category in the item editor.
How do you know when a staple is running out?
Plenty does not look inside your cupboard: it has no pantry or inventory feature. Restock Radar uses purchase history instead. After three purchases, an item can appear from 90% of its expected rebuy interval and changes from Running low to Overdue at the full interval. Intervals under one day or over 120 days are excluded, as are irregular patterns (Shopping/Services/RestockRadarService.swift). Nothing is added automatically.
How often should you recheck the pantry?
Tie the check to the shop you already do. Once a week, scan the Pantry, Frozen and Household groups before leaving. Check perishable Produce and Dairy items on the shorter rhythm that suits your household.
What doesn't belong on a staples list?
Anything bought for one recipe. A jar of harissa for one Tuesday's dinner is not a staple just because it is shelf-stable. If you would not routinely replace it, leave it off. Keep the checklist short enough to scan before a shop.
Frequently asked questions
Which pantry staples belong on a practical checklist?
This checklist has 46 items across nine groups: Produce, Dairy, Bakery, Meat & Seafood, Pantry, Frozen, Beverages, Household and Personal Care. Adjust it to what your household routinely replaces.
How do I get this checklist into a shopping list app?
Select the list on this page, copy it, open a Plenty list and paste it into the add field with one item per line.
Does Plenty track what's in my cupboard?
No — it has no pantry or inventory feature. Restock Radar predicts from your purchase history instead: after three purchases of an item, it estimates when you are due to buy it again.
How many pantry staples is too many?
If an item was only bought for one recipe, it is not a staple. Keep the list to things you would restock without thinking.
Is there a printable version of this checklist?
No. It is built to be copied straight into a shopping list app instead, which is faster than printing a PDF and retyping it at the shop.
